Where should I store winter sports equipment?

Anyone who loves winter sports knows what a big task it is to clean and pack away sports equipment — whether it's skis, a sledge, a snowboard, a bobsled, ice skates or a roof rack. For a family of four, storing all of this is a serious logistical challenge. Nothing is more frustrating than the car no longer fitting in the garage, or something constantly falling over that won't be needed again for another 8–10 months. Yet these items bring back pleasant memories, and they are important and valuable.

But let's take a look at how to store winter sports equipment properly.

A pair of skis is on average 1.5 metres long and, due to the bindings, cannot be stored just any way. If they are under constant pressure, they can easily warp. In short, we do not recommend carelessly tossing them into a corner — if nothing else, because they can be a safety hazard if they fall and land on someone. Skis should not be stored lying on their bases, nor facing each other, as this causes warping and loss of flexibility. The best approach is to store them upright, under minimal load, in a temperature-controlled room.

Under no circumstances should they be kept in a damp place or outdoors, as rust and mould will appear quickly, and this type of damage is expensive to repair. 

Ski boots can easily develop mould if they spend the off-season somewhere that is not completely dry. Nothing is more disheartening than discovering this problem the day before a trip. 

It is particularly inadvisable to store ice skates in a damp garage or cellar. After the last use they must be thoroughly dried, otherwise they will develop a terrible odour. The best option is to store them in a temperature-controlled storage unit until the next season.
